Review | Birchbox January 2014

I was thoroughly disappointed with the December offering from Birchbox and was on the verge of cancelling. I am so glad I didn't, because the box I received earlier this week was pretty darn good!

First up we have Elasticizer from Philip Kingsley which claims to strengthen, nourish and prevent hair breakage. This is a well respected brand and I love to have a product that does all of the things it claims to do. At the moment I am using Joico K-PAK Intense Hydrator which has done wonders to rebuild my heat damaged hair. I am looking forward to using the Elasticizer but it might be some time before I get round to it because you have to work it through damp hair and cover for 20 minutes, which is a bit of a faff since I don't have a bath to wash my hair over! I will report back when I've used it.

Next up we have Instant Renewal Body Oil from Premae which has a subtle smell, almost undetectable and sinks in to the skin really well. I wasn't too sure about this because I have sensitive skin and still find a lot of products that claim to be allergen free and 100% natural can cause my skin to become inflamed. Not so with this oil. I won't buy it because I am loyal to Alveeno, but it was nice to try.

Birchbox have made a huge fuss of their recent collaboration with Benefit Cosmetics and they have given us a small sample of Porefessional, which claims to magically erase pores and leave skin velvety. I have tried this product before and yes, it leaves the skin very smooth but it is still too dark for my skin tone. I prefer a primer that doesn't have any colour at all. I think I will probably give this sample to a friend but I look forward to more samples from Benefit.

Moving on, we have GLAMTOX by Rodial, which is a brand with a cult following. I have heard of it and seen it in stores, but I cannot justify the price tag for the brand. It states it is "super-hydrating". I checked the Space NK website and this night gel retails at £90 for 30ml. Can you believe it?! This sample is 15ml which makes it worth £45. That can't be right can it?! I have used this over four nights and there isn't much left. I felt like it didn't spread very well on my skin and my cheeks, which are quite dry, felt tight and unmoisturised. I wasn't impressed! My cheeks and nose have been very dry since using this product, so it isn't as hydrating as it claims to be, at least not on my skin. I am grateful for the chance to try this brand but I am also very glad I've never been tempted into buying a full price product!

Finally we have DELAROM Acquconfort Mask, which is designed to hydrate, nourish and restore vitality to the skin. I've used this twice now, and I'm currently sitting with it on my face for a third test run. This is because I found the GLAMTOX night gel so drying that my cheeks are screaming out for moisture. I find that you only need to apply a thin layer and it sits nicely without causing any burning or tingling. A lot of facial products cause my skin to tingle so this is a refreshing change. I think I prefer clay masks because you can feel them harden and it seems as though they are actively working, but this mask is really comforting and does bring moisture to my skin, as promised.

There was a little extra something in the box in the form of a gel eye mask that you pop in the fridge and then use in the morning to reduce puffiness. I tend to sleep for 9 hours a night so I've not needed to use this yet but I'm sure it will be very refreshing.

Overall a great box from Birchbox and I'm glad I didn't cancel!
