Review | Wantable Makeup Box March 2014

You may recall my first Wantable makeup box review from February. I was absolutely thrilled with it and because I signed up so quickly I was eligible for my second box absolutely free. Well, it wasn't quite free; the shipping and tax was $15 (£8.97). The exchange rate worked in the UK's favour this month as the UK cost went down from £22.06 to £21.63 ($36).

I would highly recommend reading my first Wantable review especially if you're not familiar with them, because I explain their personalised system and just how well it works. As a quick recap you complete a profile telling them what you like and what you don't. The level of detail is very impressive and it has on both occasions been a success!

I am going to apologise in advance for the poor quality of the photos in this post. I was excited to try everything out so I took them at night in artificial light whereas I prefer to take photos in natural light. Apologies aside, let's have a peek at what the postman brought...

I opted never to receive brows, blush, highlighter or bronzer. I know this may horrify a lot of people, but they're just not makeup items I'm keen on (I can't get blusher right, for a start. Feel free to leave tips for a round faced newbie!)
When I opened the box I was slightly disappointed to find another mascara because I got one last month but that one was clear so it's not too much of a problem. I checked my profile and noted that I had said I "love" mascara so I changed it to "like" in the hope I won't get another one next month. Aside from that I was really pleased!

First up we have the LAQA & Co. Fat Lip Pencil in "Fairy Blood" which has a retail value of $18 (£10.76) However, I've checked the UK website and it retails in the UK for £14.95! You can buy the lip pencil here!

Wantable describe this as a lip balm, liner and gloss all in one. I wasn't sure about the colour when I saw it as I was worried it would be too nude for my pale skin. I needn't have worried because on my lips it is the perfect nude and not at all draining. It feels amazing and buttery too, and not at all sticky. I'm most definitely going to buy another one from their UK website, perhaps in "Bossy Boots" which is a gorgeous deep red. I absolutely love this lip colour and I've been wearing it for the past couple of days. Thumbs up from me!
The next item is a Golden Rose Infinity Lash Volume & Length Mascara (black) which retails for $12.99 (£7.77) I received a clear mascara from the same brand last month which I've been wearing on days when I don't wear much makeup because it is vitamin enriched and helps build stronger lashes. This mascara promises to achieve "infinite volume and curl" which sounds good to me! The brand have a UK site but this particular mascara isn't available. I've looked on the US site and the mascara is supposed to be $15.99 but is on sale at $12.99. It's impressive that Wantable have actually told us the current retail price rather than higher price that it used to sell for. That's honesty for you!

The brush is nice and thick but as yet I haven't used it because I only wear black mascara when I'm going out. I tend to wear brown/black or brown for work so until I go out somewhere worthy of a more "dramatic" look I can't test this out.

Next up we have "Belladonna" nail polish from Liberty Republic which is sold for $14 (£8.40). This is a light pinkish coral colour. It is very thin and watery and I found it dripped from the brush and ran all over my nails. This resulted in a streaky finish after just one coat, as you can see above.
Please forgive my horrendous cuticles. I'm working on them and they don't look quite so awful under natural light. The purpose of the photo is to show that one coat isn't enough. I ended up having to use three coats to get a non-opaque coverage. I didn't take a photo of the three coats so I have found one elsewhere to give you an idea.

As you can see the colour builds up nicely. Although I like the colour I am not too sure if I have the time or patience for three coats so sadly I don't think I will end up using this much. The colour is a lovely nude that does indeed, as claimed, suit all skin tones. I would definitely try another shade in this range.

The next product and perhaps my favourite item, is a Retractable Brush from Mistura. According to their website they were featured on Dragons' Den (I assume the Canadian version since all of their prices are in CDN!) and they are a 100% cruelty free brand. This synthetic brush is absolutely the softest brush I've ever felt. I spent a good ten minutes running it over my face and even managed to get my husband to concede that it is the softest makeup brush I've ever attacked him with in the name of research!

The brush retails for $18.82 (£11.31) although on their website it is $19.99CDN which is £10.80. Still, since the box is from the USA I'll use their conversion price in the final total.

The final full size item in this month's Wantable box is With a Wink eyeshadow in "Serenity" by (PLÃ) Beauty. The name of the company is quite awkward to understand and on the paperwork from Wantable it is referred to as (Pl_)... Awkward names aside I can tell you that this eyeshadow is a matte neutral brown/purple shade. I absolutely adore the colour; it is the exact colour I wear daily and the texture is wonderful as well as the finish. It is very easy to blend. But just look how it arrived!

When I realised the colour was perfect but the product was broken I was really disappointed. I emailed straight away and asked if they could pop another one in next month's box. As a subscriber to several other beauty boxes I expected a "sorry, not our problem" style response. I couldn't have been more wrong, and the reply I got from Michelle, one of their employees just goes to show how terrible customer service is in the UK compared to the US! Michelle got back to me within two hours to say that unfortunately they are out of this shade but that she would send me a replacement item straight away! Her email was so polite, friendly and apologetic! I couldn't believe it. I was actually speechless! True to her word she has arranged for something to be sent to me and I can't wait to find out what it is!

I did manage to try this eyeshadow using the broken pieces and as I said it blends very easily. It is on par with some of my Holy Grail eyeshdows from Urban Decay (Naked Basics I love thee!) and I am going to continue trying to use this in all its broken glory. This retails for $18 (£10.82).

The final item in my box was a trial size sachet of Sorme's Fresh Start Anti-Ageing Under Foundation Makeup Enhancer. I managed to get three uses out of this sachet and I have to say I want more! I hope Wantable send out this as a full size product one day. It has a gel consistency and it goes on so smoothly that I didn't want to stop touching my face it was just so soft! Even several hours later I can still feel a noticeable difference in the texture of my skin. Top marks Sorme! A full size (30ml) bottle retails for about $28 (£16.83) and the sample was 2ml which makes it worth about £1.30. Remember though, this was a trial size and doesn't contribute towards the value of the box.

Cost of box: $36.00 / £22.06
(This month mine was free, see opening paragraph!)
Value of contents: $81.81 / £49.16
Cost with shipping / taxes: $51 / £30.65
Saving in sterling excluding shipping / taxes: £27.10
(Saving inc shipping / taxes): £18.51)
As a quick update on last month's box I'll admit that the concealer was too dark so I had to give it away. I also gave the foundation brush away not because I didn't like it (I did!) but because I won't use it (I'm in love with Real Techniques Expert Face Brush!) and I didn't want it to go to waste. I use the FACE lip pot every other day at least and the Golden Rose clear mascara about twice a week. The nail polish has been used several times both on its own and as a top coat for other polishes. I always judge the success of a box not on how happy I am when I open it, because I'm sure other beauty box subscribers will confess they've been happy/sad when seeing the contents of a box then gone on to change their mind later. With the first Wantable box I was ecstatic when I opened it and I'm still really pleased. With the second box I was a little dubious when I saw the contents as nothing jumped out at me but now I've used the products and had time to test them out I can honestly say I am still really pleased with Wantable and will continue to subscribe. I've never had two boxes in a row from any other subscription box and liked them both, except Wantable!

  1. Hey Simone! I actually found that when the shadow cracking happens, if you take some household highest % alcohol, you can pour it into the makeup and then it forms together again once it dries. Have you tried that before? I usually recommend it to my clients when I teach makeup lessons toronto. Also for the spellbound nail polish, maybe you need a white base underneath or another light pink opaque colour for the intensity to come out. Looks more like a clear coating than an actual "colour"!

    1. Thank you so much for the tips Olivia!

  2. Have emailed too. I like your box and have had one of those lava pencils before from Birchbox in the lil size in wolf,an and really loved it.

    1. I hope you get a friendly response too Jane! :)

  3. Oh I love a foreign subscription box, they just seem so much better than the UK ones. I'm currently addicted to Memebox... It's amazing but the costs do add up :-/
