Review | Kleenex shine absorbing sheets & giveaway

My skin hates me. There I've said it. It can't make up its mind whether it wants to be dry or oily. I've got a nose so oily that I could start making money as a provider of fossil fuels and cheeks so dry they make the Atacama Desert look positively humid! My chin and forehead like to flip between the two camps so as you can imagine it's pretty difficult to find face products to treat my combination skin.

Prevention is an ongoing journey but until then I've found a quick and easy way to deal with the oil well that is my nose!

Kleenex shine absorbing sheets
About ten years ago I was given a packet of Clinique oil blotting sheets and I was hooked. I kept forking out the £8 or so that they cost just because I couldn't find anything similar on the high street. They were discontinued in 2010 and my purse gave a sigh of relief. My makeup however, did not. It wasn't until 2012 that I saw Kleenex shine absorbing sheets in my local supermarket and at £2.99 for a packet of 50 I became a devotee (not least because they were always on 3 for 2 in Sainsbury's!)

The sheets come in a small cardboard box measuring 9cm x 6cm and have a powder free formula. They're purple and the side you press to your face has a waxy sort of feel. They are so easy to use; just press lightly to the area you wish to treat and voilà! As you can see from the photograph below the sheet becomes transparent where the oil leaves your face. It leaves your makeup intact and your face shine free, which brings me on to something else I love about these sheets: the name. The product refers to the grease oozing from my pores as 'shine' as opposed to the oil that it really is. It's much more polite to say someone has a slight 'shine' to their skin than it is to say they're a 'grease ball' so kudos on the name, Kleenex!

These oil blotting sheets really are a gift from the gods of beauty and save my face from resembling a slimy mess. I'm going through them at some rate at the moment due to the warmer-than-I-can-stand temperatures we're "enjoying" in the UK at the moment.

But wait! There's one small problem (isn't there always?!)... Kleenex have discontinued this product. That's right, DISCONTINUED! I was pretty sure I was buying these sheets in sufficient numbers to keep the whole of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation afloat for years to come but apparently not.

You can still buy these beauties on eBay for as little as 57p a packet if you're willing to buy 10 packets at a time. However, I'm going to let you into a little secret. Shhh, don't tell anyone BUT...

YOU CAN BUY THESE FOR 29p IN HOME BARGAINS!

Of course, I did what any other sane person would do and I bought all of their stock. Not once, not twice, not even thrice! No, I've now bought my local Home Bargains' entire stock of Kleenex shine absorbing sheets SIX times.

In case you're wondering, yes I have been asked by the staff why I'm buying so many and have been accused of wanting to sell them on eBay too. I'd sooner sell my own brother on eBay than these little beauties!

  1. My skin is a nightmare! You are not alone! I have uber sensitive skin but also get he oily thing around my nose. I have used the Kleenex make up wipes in the past and they are paraben free (something I am allergic too along with life), so these sound just up my street! :D

    1. I keep wondering why they were discontinued and it seems their whole toiletries range seems to have disappeared from shelves so perhaps they just weren't as popular as I thought. Someone has said Boots do some and they're just as good but they're about £2.99.

  6. I have oily skin so these would be great! I used absorbing sheets like this before and they were great, I stopped using them because I didn't want to keep paying for them so much plus I got a foundation that actually helped tame the oil! yay! :)
